Itinerary

Day 0, May 24, 2025

We flew from Atlanta, GA to Vancouver the night of May 23, Friday, which was the next day after the school summer break. The flight was delayed, so by the time we arrived Vancouver and checked in our hotel in Richmond near the airport, it was already 3AM local time.

In the morning, we had a brunch with an old friend at a restaurant near T&T, before picking up our RV in the early afternoon at Canadream. Then drove back to T&T and shopped there, as well as the Walmart closely, to load our necessities for the next week. It took longer than our original plan, leaving us barely any time to visit International Buddhist Temple on our way to our RV Resort. But we did spent a little bit time visiting Stevenston Village after dinner.

T&T Supermarket is the largest Asian grocery chain in Canada. Address: 8311 Lansdowne Rd, Richmond, BC V6X 3A4, Canada

Stevenston Harbor

We arrived at Garry Point Park, which is the west tip of the area with Akebono Cherry Blossom Trees near the parking area. The park space is limited, so we street-parked along the 7th Avenue and walked to the park. The cherry blossom season was already gone, but the purple lupine flowers were everywhere, as well as the yellow Scotch Broom bushes. Last time we saw these yellow flowers were back at Ireland and Scotland several years ago. From there, we walked east along the coast greenways to the village.

According to the information board in the area: The Stevenston Waterfront Greenways is a 4.8 km long trail system that links parkland, natural areas, historical sites, the Village, recreational trails, and the active industrial waterfront.

Walking on the boardwalk around the village with shops and restaurants was a pleasant experience. There were long lines in front of several ice cream shops. It is a working fishing village, with a live Fisherman’s Wharf (shops closed by the time we got there). Japanese formed a large part of Steveston's original population. You can still see it from the architecture, restaurants, souvenir stores, etc.

Ferry

We took an early morning 8AM ferry to sail from Tsawwassen to Victoria (Swartz Bay). It was a non-stop, 1.5 hour ride, and the scenery was absolutely beautiful, especially when the boat approaches Swartz Bay Area, it goes through Sturdies Bay and Fulford Harbour on the north, and Village Bay and Otter Bay on the south.

The boat is gigantic, with cafe servicing breakfast and coffee and shops. You can choose to stay insight relaxing, or go on the deck watching the scenery on either sides.

Day 3, March 6, 2024

Shark Valley

Shark Valley is a 7-mile road that reach the heart of the Everglades, with an observation tower at the end to see the vast sawgrass prairie stretching to the horizons and some of the wildlife that make Everglades famous - alligators and great flocks of wading birds. You can walk, bicycle, or take a tram tour. It is a loop so you will come back on a parallel road.

We took the first tram at 9AM in the morning. The tram is equipped with a driver and guide. The guid explained everything from what we saw, biosphere, wildlife, and history of the park. The tram also made stops when an alligator was identified nearby. We saw alligator hunting turtle twice, pretty cool. The tram would stop at the tower for half hour so the visitors can walk up to the tower for the view.

What wildlife you see at Shark Valley depends on the season. During the dry winter, alligators, wading birds, and deer concentrate near canals and borrow pits not far from the road. also the weather is mild and pleasant in this time, with low humidity and clear skies. In summer, heavy rains fill the Everglades, dispersing wildlife making them harder to see.

At this season, we saw everywhere in the shallow water a ‘ugly’, soft, spongy mat of algae, called periphyton. During the summer rainy season, periphyton floats along the surface, where it is gazed on by fish and tadpoles. During the dry winter months, which is now, animals like snails, crayfish, and insect larvae burrow into its moist interior for survival. So it plays a critical role in the ecosystem here.
